Overview: Bringing together nine biographies from Plutarch's Parallel Lives series, this edition examines the lives of major figures in Roman history, from Lucullus ( BC), an aristocratic politician and conqueror of Eastern kingdoms, to Otho ( AD), a reckless young noble who consorted with the tyrannical, debauched emperor Nero before briefly becoming a dignified and gracious. Thomas Jefferson supplied lists of recommended books in letters to Robert Skipwith 1 in and Bernard Moore 2 about the same time, to his nephew, Peter Carr, in 3 and , 4 to John Minor 5 in , and to several others. 6 The following is a distillation and synthesis of his recommendations in classical studies -- history, philosophy, religion, and literature.

Now that we have duly finished the first part of our story, we have to contemplate fates no less tragic than those of Agis and Cleomenes in the lives of the Roman couple, Tiberius and Caius, which we set in parallel. They were sons of Tiberius Gracchus, who, although he had been censor at Rome, twice consul, and had celebrated two triumphs. Gaius Sempronius Gracchus (– BC) was a Roman Popularis politician in the 2nd century BC and brother of the reformer Tiberius Sempronius election to the office of tribune in the years BC and BC and reformative policies while in office prompted a constitutional crisis and his death at the hands of the Roman Senate in BC.
